The Road to Provincials: Tournament Format
Championship Qualification
The journey to the Provincial Championships is highly competitive, with more than 50 teams entering the qualifying round for the limited field of twelve teams in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions.
The top eight teams, based on the Curling Canada Team Ranking System (CTRS), receive direct entry into the Championship round. The remaining teams compete in a Double Knockout qualifying event, typically held four weeks before the main Championship. The final four teams to emerge from the qualifying to complete the twelve-team field for the Provincials.
Triple Knockout (TKO) Format
The TKO format provides teams with multiple opportunities to qualify, as each team must lose three times to be eliminated. This introduces a captivating dynamic often described as having three “lives.”
- Teams begin in the A bracket. Their first loss drops a team to the B bracket.
- A second loss drops the team further to the C bracket.
- A third loss results in immediate elimination from the event.
Teams can qualify for the next stage (in this case, the Provincials) by winning their bracket (A, B, or C). The A bracket winner becomes the #1 seed, the B bracket winner becomes the #2 seed and the C bracket winners become the #3 and #4 seeds.
Modified Page Playoff System
Once the TKO round is complete, the four remaining teams advance to the Modified Page Playoff system to determine the provincial champion. This system is structured as follows:
- Game 1 (1 vs 2): The first and second seeds face off. The winner advances directly to the Championship Game. The loser proceeds to the Semi-Final.
- Game 2 (3 vs 4): The third and fourth seeds play an elimination match. The loser is eliminated, and the winner proceeds to the Semi-Final.
- Semi-Final: The winner of Game 2 (3 vs 4) plays the loser of Game 1 (1 vs 2). The winner of this Semi-Final advances to the Championship Game.
The triple knockout, coupled with the modified page playoff system, ensures a thrilling competition where every game matters; as long as teams are still playing they have a chance to win it all and represent Ontario at the Scotties or Brier!
