Curling with a disability

Curling Ontario is committed to making curling inclusive and accessible for athletes of all abilities. While many centres were built decades ago and may still lack some accessibility features, recent Trillium grants and other funding have helped numerous clubs retrofit entrances, rink access, and viewing areas so more people can participate.

Today, many clubs across the province offer wheelchair curling, stick curling, and programs for visually impaired athletes. Regional, provincial and national championships are supported by Curling Ontario, Curling Canada and partner organizations such as the Canadian Council of the Blind.

For more information about adaptive programs or how your club can become more accessible, contact Erin Jarvis at erin@curlingontario.ca.

Stick curling lets Active-for-Life players keep enjoying the game using a delivery stick. Curling Ontario supports stick curling and permits its use in many competitions — check individual event rules for specifics.

Provincial two‑person and four‑person stick championships are held each season; visit Curling Ontario’s events page for current competition details and registration.

Visually impaired curling follows the same four‑player format with adaptations: a designated sweeper and a guide assist with alignment and shot communication. Events use a classification system for visual acuity to ensure fair competition. Visually impaired curling is featured at ParaSport Winter Games and other para‑competitions.

Wheelchair curling is open to athletes who are non‑ambulant or have limited walking ability and often includes recreational and competitive pathways. Teams of four must include at least one female player. While not all clubs are fully accessible, there are active wheelchair programs across the province and multiple annual competitions, including events that qualify for national championships. Contact Erin at erin@curlingontario.ca to find local programs, accessibility resources, and event listings through Curling Ontario.
