We are a bustling 4 sheet curling facility in the heart of maple syrup country, just 15 minutes north of Waterloo Ontario.

 

The Elmira and District Curling Club is accepting applications for an Ice Technician Contractor for an initial 1-year term commencing in the fall of 2026. Following a successful first season, a longer-term contract could be negotiated.

 

Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Arrange for the preseason inspection of the Ice Plant in early September, and order any ice making supplies needed. The club will provide funds for paint and other materials.
  • Establish timelines for all activities and communicate them to the Ice Committee prior to compressor start-up.
  • Establish labour needs, both hired and volunteer, required to cover these activities and notify the Ice Committee with appropriate lead-time to allow for volunteer recruitment.
  • Install four sheets of curling ice at the Club’s premises located at 40 Eldale Road, Elmira. Target date for curling is the week of October 5, 2026,
  • Maintain the ice surface in top playing condition throughout the curling season. Daily maintenance for all daytime and evening draws (scraping, cleaning, pebbling, etc.) as well as vacuuming the carpets and floor surfaces adjacent to the ice surface and maintain member amenities in the arena.
  • Maintain curling ice for bonspiels, rentals and OCA events, as required.
  • Monitor and adjust, as necessary, the operation of ice-making equipment, dehumidifier and rink heaters, and keep records and logs as required by either the Ice Committee or the TSSA.
  • Schedule in-season flooding of the ice, as required, minimizing the impact on scheduled league curling.
  • Remove the ice surface at the end of the curling season, ensuring all areas of the arena are cleaned up, ready for the following season.
  • Snow removal from Emergency Exits and minor repairs and routine maintenance within the arena.

 

Compensation:

  • The total contract value will range from $40,000.00 – $45,000 plus HST, depending on the experience/qualifications of the contractor). The contract value will be paid in 15 equal installments, paid twice per month, beginning 1 September and ending 31 March,
  • A performance bonus of up to $1,000 plus HST may be payable, at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
  • The contractor will be reimbursed for necessary travel at a standard mileage rate.

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Level 2 Curling Technician Certificate or equivalent, Level 3 preferred.
  • Previous experience in curling ice maintenance services and minimum (3) years of experience in making curling ice.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED. WHMIS/GHS training considered an asset.
  • Proven people skills required to work effectively and cooperatively with the Ice Committee, Board of Directors, Club Manager, Club members and guests.

 

Prior to a contract being executed, the successful contractor will need to provide a completed Criminal Background Check from the Waterloo Regional Police Service. The fee for this check will be reimbursed by the Club upon contract commencement.
