Safe to Succeed

by Olympic curling champion Brad Gushue

In this fireside chat with Brad, we will uncover what it takes to build a team that performs at the highest level—where trust runs deep, communication is clear, and everyone looks out for each other? In Safe to Succeed, Olympic curling champion Brad Gushue shares the winning strategies that have helped him lead teams to gold on the world stage—and create cultures that prioritize both performance and safety.

Drawing from his experience in high-pressure environments, Brad unpacks the pillars of sustainable success: identifying the right talent, building strong leadership, creating clear plans, and—most critically—fostering a culture of openness, accountability, and care.

Brad explores how embracing vulnerability and mentorship not only drives results but creates a team environment where people feel safe to speak up, support one another, and learn from mistakes—essential components of a strong safety culture. This inspiring session gives leaders and teams a vision to strengthen communication, build trust, and embed safety—both physical and psychological—into the DNA of their organizations.

ABOUT BRAD GUSHUE

Brad Gushue is all about firsts. An iconic Canadian curler from St. John’s, Newfoundland, he is a celebrated Olympian and World Champion. Brad has also won a record-setting 6 Tim Horton’s Briers as a skip in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. In 2006, incredible teamwork and leadership won them Gold at the Olympic Games. This medal marked the first time that a Canadian team won Gold in men’s curling. With his teammates, Gushue also became the first Newfoundlander ever to win an Olympic gold medal. At the 2018 Tim Horton’s Brier, Gushue set a new record for Brier game wins as a Skip, breaking a three-way tie with previous record-holders.
A graduate of Memorial University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Brad has also completed an MBA through the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University in Kingston.  Brad has successfully balanced a demanding athletic career, and family life while running several businesses. He was inducted into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador and received an Honorary Doctorate from Memorial University, Newfoundland.
As a fresh face on the keynote circuit, Brad shares how mentoring teams and overcoming obstacles in high-pressure environments is key to top performance. He inspires audiences with stories of leadership and how to embrace vulnerability in a way that builds even greater strength.

Accountabilities and Expectations: Tools and Resources for Staff and Volunteers

BY MARK R. THOMPSON

Board members, club executives, and volunteer coordinators, this session is designed for you!

Great curling clubs don’t happen by accident. They happen when everyone knows their role and feels supported in doing it well.

We’ve seen this pattern across dozens of sports clubs and nonprofits: the longtime leader who carries everything in their head finally steps down, and suddenly nobody knows how anything works. Ice contracts, league coordination, vendor relationships—all that institutional knowledge walks out the door. The clubs that survive and thrive are the ones that use these transitions as opportunities to build the systems they should have had all along. They emerge stronger, more sustainable, and less dependent on any single person.

This session combines governance fundamentals with practical tools that actually work. You’ll learn essential board responsibilities and the crucial difference between governance oversight and day-to-day operations. More importantly, you’ll discover how to create role clarity that empowers people instead of overwhelming them.

We’ll cover board basics like fiduciary duties and policy development, then dive into the practical stuff: writing role descriptions that attract volunteers, setting realistic expectations, and having supportive conversations when things go off track.

Through hands-on exercises, you’ll draft role descriptions for common club positions and work through scenarios with other club leaders. You’ll learn simple systems for accountability that feel like support, not surveillance.

The tools you’ll take home have been tested in real clubs facing real challenges. They work because they’re designed for volunteers who have day jobs and busy lives.

What You’ll Take Home:

  • Board governance essentials that make sense
  • Role templates for 8 common club positions
  • Conversation guides for accountability check-ins
  • Planning tools that prevent last-minute scrambles
  • Recognition strategies that keep volunteers engaged

Perfect for clubs ready to build the clarity and structure that turns good intentions into great operations.

Evaluating Your Club's ''Storefront'': How First Impressions Drive Member Experience, Satisfaction & Growth

BY 59CLUB (padraig ''paddy'' kelly and Ryan Tracy)

At 59club Canada, we understand that today’s curling clubs operate in a competitive landscape — and that growth isn’t just about recruiting new members, but about creating experiences that resonate from the first interaction. This session focuses on evaluating and enhancing the full member journey — from the moment a potential member discovers your club to their first visit, call, or online interaction.
We’ll guide Curling Ontario club leaders through a practical, critical look at their “storefront” — physical, digital, and human — to uncover the gaps that may be limiting growth, retention, and satisfaction.
session objective
To help Curling Ontario’s clubs create a welcoming, responsive, and modern member experience that drives satisfaction, increases retention, and supports long-term revenue growth.
key focus areas

Service Benchmarking: Seeing Your Club Through a New Member’s Eyes

How easy is it to join your club — and how does it feel? We’ll introduce tools and frameworks to evaluate all aspects of your club’s presence.

This diagnostic approach allows clubs to identify friction points in the member journey — and see how small changes can drive measurable improvements in satisfaction and perception.
  • Website and digital presence
  • Email and phone responsiveness
  • Walk-in and front-desk experiences
  • Facility presentation and signage
  • Club volunteers and staff engagement and professionalism

Engagement as Growth Strategy: Building Experiences That Retain and Attract
Learn how intentional touchpoints throughout the member journey (especially for new members) can build trust, increase satisfaction, and lead to more organic growth. We’ll explore how responsiveness, tone, and consistency across communication channels shape both first impressions and long-term retention. We’ll also provide examples of how clubs can “map” their current member journey to uncover overlooked opportunities — from onboarding emails to first-game welcomes to how a club handles casual inquiries from prospective curlers.

why this matters
Many clubs unknowingly maintain a “storefront” that caters only to existing members — while unintentionally creating barriers for new ones. Current members may accept the status quo, but potential members are assessing your value before ever stepping on the ice.
If clubs are serious about growth, leadership must view their operations from the outside in. This session helps them do just that — with honest, constructive, and actionable insights.
