Ice Technician Contractor - 2 Year Term

Life is sweeter in Elmira!


We are a bustling 4 sheet curling facility in the heart of maple syrup country, just 15 minutes north of Waterloo Ontario.

Elmira and District Curling is accepting applications for an Ice Technician Contractor for a 2-year term commencing in the fall of 2025.

The terms of the contract will be as follows;

The Contractor agrees to install four sheets of curling ice at the Club’s premises located at 40 Eldale Road, Elmira, Ontario, N3B 2Z5, and to maintain the said ice surface in top playing condition throughout the curling season, and without limiting generality of the foregoing to arrange for, and participate in, the preseason equipment inspection and startup process and ensure that any required supplies are ordered. Install curling ice for October 2025.


To do this the Contractor must: 

  • Establish timelines for all activities and communicate them to the Ice Committee prior to compressor start-up. 
  • Establish labour needs, both hired and volunteer, required to cover these activities and notify the Ice Committee with at least one-week lead-time to allow for recruitment.
  • Ensure that all materials have been ordered in a timely fashion,
  • Coordinate with any outside contractors, if required, to facilitate the installation of the ice surface and supervise all labour.
  • The Club will provide the necessary funds for ice paint and other materials, and reimburse the Contractor for necessary job-related travel as per the Club’s approved travel reimbursement policy. 
  •  Conduct all necessary clean-up of installation materials and overspray from the arena and ensure that the Club’s common spaces and exterior are free of installation materials and have been tidied up prior to the start-up date. 
  • Train and instruct hired assistants in the specific operations that they will be required to perform. 
  • Practice and promote all Club safety policies and best practices. 
  •  Maintain ice daily for all daytime and evening draws (scraping, cleaning, pebbling, etc.) as well as vacuuming the carpets and floor surfaces adjacent to the ice surface and maintain member amenities in the arena. 
  • Maintain curling ice for bonspiels, rentals and OCA events, as required.
  • Monitor and adjust, as necessary, the operation of ice-making equipment, dehumidifier and rink heaters, and keep records and logs as required by either the Ice Committee or the TSSA.

 

  • Contractor Agreement – The Head Ice Technician for a fixed 2-year term shall;
  • Operate ice-making equipment and lighting in a fashion to optimally manage energy consumption; 
  • Maintain ice-making equipment, arena lighting, measuring devices, Club brooms and delivery devices in good repair.
  • Clear snow ice at entrance to curling club and the fire escape walkway between the Curling Club facility and Golf Club facility.
  • Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance within the arena.
  • Provide a cell phone number to allow 24-hour on-call availability for emergencies arising from power outages and ice plant breakdowns. 
  • Make reasonable effort to ensure that up-to-date technologies and information regarding curling ice maintenance are being sought and applied when applicable.
  •  Arrange for, and oversee, the plant shutdown at the end of the season and the necessary summer storage of ice-making equipment, decals, signage, curling stones, 
  • Arrange for the texturing of curling stones as required
  • Flood the ice as required through the season, with a minimum of once per season and that being during the annual Christmas break. The Club recommends that the Head Ice Technician utilize suitable protective headgear while performing all on-ice activities to prevent injury.


Compensation:

  • A base salary of approximately $40,000.00 plus HST will be paid in 15 equal installments, paid twice per month, beginning 1 September and ending 31 March, 
  •  The Club may, at the discretion of the Board of Directors, pay a bonus of up to $2,000 plus HST payable on 31 December, based on feedback solicited from Club members, the Ice Committee, and the Board of Directors if:
  • The ice is installed on time and in good order for the beginning of the season and maintained at an excellent quality through to 31 December.
  • Contractor has maintained excellent internal and external customer relations.

 

The successful contractor will possess:    

  • Completion of a Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12).
  • Possession minimum of a Level 2 Curling Technician Certificate or equivalent, Level 3 preferred.
  • Previous experience in curling ice maintenance services and minimum (3) years of experience in making curling ice.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED. WHMIS/GHS training considered an asset. 
  • Proven people skills required to work effectively and cooperatively with the Elmira Curling Club Ice Committee, Board of Directors, Club Manager, Club members and guests.
